Venturing off the beaten path in Siem Reap and rewards yourself with an authentic experience of local lifestyles and temples. Visit Beng Mealea, one of the last real jungle temples in the area and climb through it to explore all hidden spaces this temple harbours. Visit the Great Tonle Sap Lake and the village of Kampong Khleang and learn how Cambodian people have mastered the art of living on the water.
Meet with your driver and guide and enjoy a day away from the tourism crowds. Beng Mealea was built between the late 11th and the first half of the 12th century and is one of the largest ensembles in the Angkor region. The temple is regarded to as a standalone masterpiece situated 40km east of the main temples of Angkor along the ancient road that connected the Angkor Kingdom with Prasat Bakan. It is assumed that King Suryavarman II ordered the construction of Beng Mealea, maybe even as a prototype of its larger brother; Angkor Wat, but no actual prove can be found in its depictions. The ruins of Beng Mealea are overgrown with vegetation, allowing a real “wilderness experience.” In recent years a wooden pathway has been constructed throughout the temple to allow people to observe the beauty of the temple in ease. However, most people venture of the beaten track and find their own way through the temple allowing them to experience the feeling the first explorers must have felt when they uncovered this magnificent structure. Continue afterwards to Kampong Khleang, located about one hour away. Upon arrival board a local boat and set out for an exploration of this unique village located on the flood plains of the Tonle Sap. The houses are built on stilts, some of them up to 10 meters above ground. The village is considered to be the largest permanent settlement on the lake. Visit one of the local homes and enjoy a simple picnic lunch overlooking the busy rituals on the lake. Tour the village further after lunch and witness the special way of life people have gotten accustomed to in Cambodia.
